Pyongyang, North Korea - North Korea’s hunger for war is quite apparent.  Though pot bellied and bow legged, Kim Jong Un’s appetite for destruction could be fueled by a basic human function not being met in his nation:  hunger.

The entire nation of North Korea is in poverty.  And though our image above pokes fun at Un’s angry tantrum and nuclear threats, perhaps we should take a break from uploading cute cat pictures to Reddit.com or watching old women dance to Gangnam Style on YouTube to look deeper into the American policies that are isolating North Korea, perhaps to the point of causing a global war.

The United States has a standing policy of sanctions against North Korea.  Basically, until the nation ceases to present itself as a military threat to South Korea, allied nations and the United States, the people there will continue to starve, not have running water, electricity, proper medicine and suffer in conditions of squalor.

Many North Koreans know nothing of the outside world.  The Republic is an isolationist regime that uses torture and prison camps as deterrents against anyone who does not follow proper edict as dictated by the ruling power of the country.  That current power is Kim Jong Un and he is a spitting image of his father, from policy to looks.

The problem with our current policy toward North Korea is that it breeds a ground for hatred.  Every bit of suffering North Koreans endure, the state government blames on the United States.  Our nation has become the hated scapegoat and for Kim Jong Un, he really has no choice but to continue playing up such beliefs.  His position of power will be solidified by having a scapegoat:  a guy named Adolf Hitler used similar strategy, but picked on a more disenfrachised group of Germany as he did so.

The situation in North Korea can only end in armed conflict with current policy.  Strong stances from Russia and China prevent any current war, but the moment Un goes too far and develops a weapon of mass destruction, firing it most likely at South Korea or Japan, he will trigger a global war.  America will retaliate.  Russia and China will likely ally and protest American military action in the Eastern Hemisphere.  The world can be thrown into global chaos.

While concerns are that if America does ease up on economic sanctions and provide food, Un may give the food to only his standing army, we must find a way to ensure the people of the country are fed, know who feeds them and are grateful for it.  Forcing North Korea’s hand into allowing UN relief stations for its people would be a great measure to bridge the relationship that can bring North Korea from starting global war:  the people of the nation.

If North Koreans can get the message that the world can be a good, sympathetic place who has no qualms seeing they are at least fed and clothed, it will do wonders in breaking down the walls of diplomatic strife

For anyone who says it can never work, look at the fall of the USSR.  It took time, but eventually American sponsored bread lines, the survival of a Democracy-friendly president of a cout-de-tat, and the heart of the people proved that hope can arise in even the most oppressive regime.  So maybe, just maybe, offering Kim Jong Un a Snickers can satiate the little pot bellied dictators hunger and pressure for war.
