Facebook’s every growing popularity and reach has been marred by one key issue:  privacy.  With over 1 billion users wanting Facebook to be the app-de-choice for curing boredom at work, home, school and everywhere in between forces the company to constantly create new and innovative ways for people to share and communicate on literally every communication device.

It’s Facebook’s sheisty and unstable privacy settings and declaration that has the internet upset today, and ironically, Mark Zuckerberg’s sister Randi Zuckerberg is the victim.

Now when reading this headline, I personally thought “Oh great, now the Zuckerberg sisters want to be Kardashians.”  I was expecting a hot and saucy picture of Ray J giving Randi Zuckerberg the business and the photo being ‘accidentally’ leaked online.   The guys at TMZ would have had their day after Christmas and the rest of the internet would have stopped for just a second, to make snide comments and give the story slightly more commentary than other headlines about the fiscal cliff and all that.  Thank goodness that my scandal prone mind was wrong.

Randi Zuckerberg actually posted a nice picture of the Zuckerberg family and friends joking around and using the nice “Poke” app.  I’d expect all of Zuck’s family to be living in golden halls adorned with diamonds, so was just just as shocked when I found out that my scraping to get six-digit-salary kitchen looked better than Mitt Romney’s.

The problem with the picture occurred after a woman named Callie Schweitzer tweeted the nice family photo to her 40,000 followers on Twitter, who then shared the picture on all their various social networks.  Schweitzer was sweet, deleting the photo and apologizing.  Unfortunately, in 2012 that is not enough.  The picture is everywhere and has become news, underscoring the main concern about Facebook’s privacy settings.

It was likely that Schweitzer was a friend of a friend who was tagged in the image, causing it to pop up in her news feed.  Seeing a cute family picture of such a well-known family, just like anyone may be inclined to do with the Obamas or Jolie-Pitts sharing a cute picture, Schweitzer shared it with her social network on Twitter.  And in an instant, the picture is worldwide.

With a radical near-miss by Instagram apparently announcing last week that it would reserve the right to sell any photos, to Facebook’s confusing privacy policy, as we become more inter-connected we see we will need to find ways to remain unconnected.
