Tokyo, Japan – After meeting Honda’s sophisticated ASIMO robot and playing a round of soccer with it, President Barack Obama took a photo-op shot and is seen playfully bowing to the robot, a standard greeting for formal occasions in Japan.
[adsense]During the meeting, the ASIMO humanoid robot took time to show its soccer prowess and coordination, a marvel of 21st century engineering that will come in handy as humans prepare to travel to the moon and Mars. Robotic explorers with great maneuverability and similar motion to humans can prove invaluable in the long run.
But as modern society goes, sometimes the hopes and dreams of the future are just too much to think about. It’s easier to belittle a US president actively interacting with a pinnacle of human technological achievement, and instead make comment jokes about how much ‘President Nobama bowing to a white robot, must be in his jeans [sic]’ as one genius right-wing commentator elaborated.
ASIMO stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility. The robot was programmed to impress President Obama with its mobility, showing off its skills in formally greeting a politician, playing sports and more. Obama commented on his first interaction with ASIMO, “We saw some truly amazing robots, though I have to say the robots were a little scary. They were too lifelike. They were amazing.”
The commentary is a testament to how far robot technology is progressing. When we couple the power of microprocessing, remote human interaction and communication, and the mobile ability of robots such as ASIMO, the world and universe is suddenly much easier to explore. The possibilities of robotic technology in humanity’s future provides great possibilities for exploration, economy and efficiency. But let’s not forget innovation, imagination and inspiration.
